Phil Kline's Unsilent Night Call for Submissions

The City of Cambridge is inviting artists to submit a proposal to be part of the Winterfest event, Phil Kline's Unsilent Night, in November 2023. This free community event features weather resistant light installations created by local artists. The installations are placed strategically around downtown Galt’s public spaces.

Application deadline: Friday, September 15, 2023

Schedule and Compensation:

  • Proposals are assessed and awarded as they are received and based on funding available. We encourage you to apply early!
  • Following submission, the City of Cambridge special events team will assess the quality of the application based on the artistic merit, innovation, use of space, connection to the festival theme, artist’s ability to carry out the proposed project, and budget requirements.
  • Funding is given to participating artists. Staff do their best to coordinate and allocate funding to artists based on the event budget, which is greatly derived from the generous support of community sponsors.
  • Once proposals are accepted, artists can invoice for compensation at their convenience, be it before or after the event.
  • We encourage artists to pursue additional project funding or sponsorship to aid in the development, exhibition and display of the installation.

Installation Information:

  • Artists working in any medium may apply, but installations must be weather resistant to rain, snow, high winds, cold temperatures and able to last the duration of the outdoor event.
  • Installation should be non-denominational, inclusive, engaging and showcase light, art & technology.
  • Presented work must comply with health and safety & accessibility standards.
  • Proposed projects can be new, existing, or can be work that has already been exhibited.
  • The final installation must be as close to the original concept submitted as possible.

Terms and Conditions:

  • Event staff will work with the artist to determine an installation location that will meet their requirements while considering power, security and the likelihood of vandalism. Preferences can be provided with the application for further discussion with event staff.
  • Successful artists must be self-sufficient as the City of Cambridge is unable to assist with the set up or take down, provide volunteer support, or supplies (i.e. barricades, fencing).
  • This is a free event; no admission charges will apply.
  • Installations occur regardless of the weather. In the case the event is cancelled, artists will be notified by staff in advance.
  • LED lights are recommended whenever possible.
  • Installations must be set up by Friday, November 24, at 4 p.m. and cannot be taken down until notified by event staff after 8:30 p.m.
  • The City of Cambridge will promote the artist and installation for the event, including event day signage. The deadline to provide details to include on promotional material and signage is Monday, October 9, 2023.
  • The City of Cambridge's insurance does not account for third-party vendors. To ensure the protection of the artists, all artists must provide a Certificate of Liability of Insurance, naming the City of Cambridge as additional insured for 2 million dollars to be able to display their artwork at this event.

NOTE: Please fill out the application carefully as information will be used on marketing materials (i.e. website and signage).
